Optical imaging is an emerging imaging technology with the potential to offer new approaches in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer as well as other diseases. Optical imaging uses lasers to illuminate superficial tissue – such as breast tissue. By combining this technology with an optical dye, tumors might be targeted more precisely. Due to its high resolution and sensitivity, optical imaging is expected to offer breast cancer patients a less aggressive, more patient-friendly follow-up examination.

Royal Philips Electronics and Schering AG started in November a joint strategic platform to develop Optical Imaging Equipment. Philips will provide the optical imaging equipment and Schering will make the contrast agents injected into a patient which help pinpoint the sick cells.

Anteryon supports this platform through the supplie of optical components assemblies.

SID 2005 Best Buzz Awards

Insight Media is proud to announce the winners of the Best Buzz awards for the SID 2005 Symposium and Exhibition. The Best Buzz awards are selected by polling Insight Media staff, analysts, press and conference attendees about what was new and exciting to them. They reflect what people were talking about most at the show/exhibition and what we were asked most about. The awards do not necessarily represent excellence in technical performance, but are a reflection of the "buzz" or noise the products created. The Best Buzz awards honors the "must-see" products or technologies at the show.

Top honors for "Best 3D Technology Buzz" at SID 2005 go to:

Philips 3D Solution including:

Passive 3D lenticular LCD with IC3D signal processor and software

42-inch 3D LCD monitor (passive), IC3D display chip for 3D signal processing and decoder software for real time rendering and interweaving of depth information into 2D content to create a 3D image.

With this solution, the group has decoupled the 3D display from the content with an autostereoscopic (no glasses) system. The IC3D signal processor and software will visualize 3D data sets or 2D content that is converted for 3D display_effectively removing the barriers to wide 3D use and acceptance. Viewing zones were eliminated by angling the lenticular array - very clever

The Dutch Photonic landscape - Electro Optics Magazine April/May 2005

Our series on the photonics markets in various European countries continues with a look at the Netherlands, courtesy of Koen Demeyer and Jelle de Jong of Anteryon BV, together with a brief round-up of some key companies based there.

The Netherlands hosts a multibillion-euro revenue high tech photonics industry, employing thousands of people. This industry plays a more than significant part in this rather small country.

Large companies, such as Philips Electronics, have been building on an innovative climate for more than 100 years. They continue to generate spin-offs, which become in turn large companies. ASML, a leading player in semiconductor wafer stepper machines, is a perfect example. Innovative business clusters continue to expand in the regions around Eindhoven, Twente and Delft. The ties with other Photonic business clusters such as San Jose in the US or Jena in Germany are close. However, a local market of several hundreds of millions euros exists, supplying research centres, OEM’s and instrument builders.

Most companies involved in this market operate on a global scale and excel in high value. But, in spite of this high value and innovative performance on an international level, the Dutch market is very fragmented and many companies may be sub critical in size.

Dutch companies operate in most of the key areas of photonics, such as light sources (Lumileds), photonic repographics (OCE), laser (micro) machining and cutting (ALSI, Omega Laser systems), optical medical diagnostics (River Diagnostics), sensors (Lionix) and, of course, laser modules, aspheric collimator arrays and integrated lens stacks for camera modules (Anteryon).

Cameras need CMOS or CCD sensor technologies. The Netherlands hosts Dalsa Professional Systems focusing on CCD and Delft Electronic products providing CMOS and CCD based image intensifiers. Philips Eindhoven is also at the heart of many of the developments in optical CD and DVD media.

With one of the densest populated countries in the world, the Netherlands enjoys a strong telecom infrastructure. Three Five Photonics in Houten is a fabless developer and supplier of monolithically integrated opto electronic chips based in Indium Phosphide technology.

The typical Dutch environmental awareness is also present in instruments offered by Avantes and Ocean Optics. On the OEM front, OTB contributes to energy saving through solar cell and OLED manufacturing equipment.

It’s a small step from here to the emerging biophotonics market. The Biophotonics and related microfluidic segment is the ultimate challenge for multidisciplinary problem solving. As mentioned above the three main clusters, Twente, Delft and Eindhoven, with leading institutes as MESA+, TNO and TU Eindhoven, are playing an important role with their strong R&D infrastructure.

Moreover Eindhoven, together with Leuven (IMEC) an Aachen (Fraunhofer), forms an international high-tech triangle. This creates unique opportunities to combines expertises in photonic design, manufacturing, biophotonics and semiconductors across the borders and at a practical short distance.

Value potential in lens on chip packages

Anteryon is on a constant learning curve enabling solutions that meet today’s demands of miniaturization and increase of functionality. Lens on chip technologies play a leading role in the market for mobile imagers and cell phones. The new Integrated Lens Stack technology for wafer level packaging of camera modules by Anteryon is a good example of knowledge transfer between different players in the supply chain.

The goal was to create a small camera module with improved robustness for vibration and shock with better options for product development and economic manufacturing. Today, Anteryon is one of the few suppliers in the world of wafer-based integrated optics for embedded camera modules, who plays a leading role in the development of new lens on chip packages.

The challenge for Anteryon was to make moulds enabling double-sided multiple replication

of aspherical lenses on an eight-inch glass wafer. A stack of bonded optical wafers

and spacer plates resulted in an Integrated Lens Stack (ILS), with powerful lens functions

based on multiple aspheric curvatures. With many players in the supply chain - silicon wafer supplier, micro imaging lens supplier, wafer level packaging manufacturer and final assembler - this project turned out to be the biggest project ever for Anteryon.

Gerard Dohmen, VP of Anteryon: “In the early stage, we already saw this was going to be an immense project requiring considerable resources. We outsourced the project leadership to Philips CFT to provide an integral solution. By appointing sub teams with an Anteryon member in each team, we safeguarded a gradual knowledge transfer from Philips

CFT to Anteryon. With those teams we have been able to upscale our replication skills”.

In the Integrated Lens Stack project, three elements had to be proven: applying the newest generation CMOS, making wafer-level packaging interfaces and making optical wafers with aspherical lenses at the highest position accuracy. Based on a demonstrator, Anteryon has proven that this new ILS technology is successful. A smaller footprint, better quality and

lower costs make the ILS technology very suitable for next generation camera modules with added functionalities, such as zoom functions and auto focus. Klaas Kerkhof from Philips CFT, project leader for Anteryon says: “Rapid knowledge transfer and integration is the key to success in this market”.

The Integrated Lens Stack generated IP for Anteryon, five invention disclosures have been submitted, of which two are certainly expected to be granted.

With this technology, Anteryon started generating revenues. We are now ready to make customized optical packages in production levels ranging from low series to high volume demands.

For more detailed information about this product please take a look at our Integrated Lens Stacks & Camera Modules page or fill in the inquiry form by clicking here.
